Trade the Treadmill for the Dance Floor

In today’s world of crammed commuting schedules and excessive hours spent in front of screens, our bodies are suffering as a result of our sedentary lifestyles. When trying to resolve a lack of fitness, we generally opt for a difficult and demoralizing workout routine that feels more like a second job than a means to release our frustrations. Being active through regular exercise should not be viewed as punishment but rather as enjoyment. A quiet revolution is now taking place where, instead of doing monotonous workouts on a treadmill, people are going to dance fitness studios like VJS Fitness Centre, located in Kalyan Nagar, India. These types of dance fitness studios are demonstrating that you do not need sterile facilities in which to become fit; rather, they create dynamic ways of moving while connecting with others.

By focusing on engaging the mind and body as a whole vs. isolating the muscles through repetitive movements, dance aerobics has a more complete fitness experience than does lifting weights. “Dance aerobics helps improve overall health because you are utilising both cardiovascular and strength-training; you will be improving your cardiac and mood; and you will also lose weight,” says Albun, a representative of VJS Fitness Centre. “Dance aerobics is a full-body workout; exercise through dance aerobics will improve your cardiac health because it speeds up and then slows down your heart rate at least once during each workout session.” “Additionally, because dance aerobics is a complete body workout,” explains Albun, “you will improve your circulatory system while exercising this way.”

The contemporary fitness problem is not necessarily a shortage of desire, but rather an issue with vaulting over motivational barriers. Breaking the cycle of exhaustion caused by repetitive workouts requires a shift from unhealthy to healthy environments. “People come out, participate in a workout with us, and their perspective as it relates to what a workout is changed,” explains Albun. “Being in proximity to large numbers of athletic individuals helps to motivate them to return to the gym and to adhere to a long-term fitness regime.”  Unlike imposing heavy man-lifting zones that have traditionally been presented, this new movement is extraordinarily inclusive. “(Zumba) is appropriate for nearly every age,” adds Albun. “You can adjust the intensity of an activity to suit a participant’s ability, lessening difficulty to keep participants active.”

While the physical benefits of Zumba are many, the mental effects will often exceed those experienced in a mirror reflection of yourself after completion. The powerful energy and excitement of both music and movement create an effective antidote to urban anxiety. “Working out with friends (and) family takes you out of your daily routine,” explains Albun. “Instead of being bored or feeling anxious about life you have an opportunity to alter your situation, find relief from stress, and gain confidence.” This shared effort also acts as a direct antidote to modern social isolation. “When people achieve their own personal fitness goals to encourage others to achieve theirs,” adds Albun. “Community-based fitness events can create amazing results as all involved strive to support one another.”

It’s important to have realistic expectations about how you live your life outside of the studio to achieve real health. “Weight Loss cannot be achieved by dance aerobics,” says Laura Albun at Dance Dallas. “You need a mix of clean eating, enough sleep, and exercise to achieve any lasting change.” One of the biggest challenges when creating this routine is maintaining consistency. The best workout is not always based simply on the number of calories burned; it could be based on what you’re looking forward to doing tomorrow. Stop being afraid of going to the gym and Start Dancing instead!
