Custom Tailoring: A Statement of True Craftsmanship

In the age of the domination of fast fashion and overconsumption, where shopping for clothes has become a source of overstimulation, we find the crowd of Bangalore turning towards custom pieces of clothing tailored to one’s needs and desires. Bespoke or custom tailoring is clothing that is made due to the specific requests of a customer by their tailor, creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. This process allows customers to bring their dream wardrobe to life in the hands of a skilled craftsman.

The legacy of tailoring in India

Custom tailoring has always been a part of the history of the subcontinent, from the ancient and Vedic period, where stitching was minimal; however, the intricate details of weaving, dying, and embroidery called for highly skilled professionals. The arrival of the Mughals in the subcontinent added complexity and depth to the stitching styles, which was further exemplified with the arrival of the British, with the focus shifting to western styles of clothing, such as the three-piece suits. However, with the onset of the industrial revolution, the markets across India became filled with fast fashion pieces, which were preferred by the masses. However, in recent years, the fashion world, especially in Bangalore, has seen a shift towards custom tailoring as a luxurious process defined by its highly skilled craftsmanship.

The focus on slow fashion today

For so long, fast fashion and pre-made luxury clothing have been the focus and definition of fashion, but custom tailoring has slowly started to rewrite that narrative. Slow fashion is a mindful approach to clothing that prioritizes sustainability, ethical production, and highlights important crafts over mindless overconsumption and discardment of clothes. While fast fashion is all about chasing the trends and producing clothing at a massive scale in the shortest period of time possible, custom tailoring focuses on creating attire for one specific person at a time, according to their needs and wants, while taking into consideration the type of fitting they want and the right measurements, which results in clothing that is made for the customer with excellent craftsmanship.

The environmental impact

Sustainability has always been a point of concern in the world of fashion, and custom tailoring may just offer the solution. Getting your clothes hand-stitched forces one to spend time with the craftsman or the tailor throughout the process, discussing every aspect of it. Understanding the time and effort that goes into the making of each piece of garment makes you realize how the journey that each piece of fabric takes to be turned into a cloth and the efforts and immense skill that is put in by the craftsmen, helps you appreciate the craft. Slow fashion and custom tailoring make sure that the artisans are fairly paid and that the environmental impact is minimal.

In the world of custom tailoring, each piece has a story to tell. The level of attention that is poured into each piece of clothing truly elevates a mere piece of clothing to a priceless addition to one’s closet, one that can be cherished for years to come.
