Bengaluru has long been known as a vibrant hub of technology due to its array of computers and modern advances; however, it now finds itself transitioning away from its former self as it becomes a globally recognized technology leader. With this evolution came an equally significant change as Bengaluru began restructuring itself physically. Today, as we look towards the year 2026, “The Garden City” is on track to become “The Fitness City,” where social connection and personal achievement are characterized by the use of early morning running paths and blue paint (“blue paths”) surrounding athletic facilities. Fitness has transitioned from being an individual pursuit to becoming a community-oriented, data-driven approach that is reshaping urbanization.
The Scale of Community Endurance

At the core of this effort lies a quantum leap in the quantity and scale of running clubs. Turning from solitary runners in the Cubbon Park to full-fledged “run clubs,” the number of people running in clubs has expanded exponentially. Currently, the average number of people running in clubs across Bengaluru varies from thousands to tens of thousands. The Bengaluru Marathon currently attracts an average of 35000 participants, and the “One Run” global movement saw over 2000 local runners participate in a synchronized race event.
The new “third place” within our cities are these clubs; places to gather outside of your home or work. A neighbourhood running club will replace an evening pub; an environment devoid of the traditional hierarchy typically present in corporate social settings. Networking happens at the “6:00/km” pace as everyone comes together towards a common goal of endurance. This is a tremendous way to combat the urban burnout experienced by so many today.
An explosion of pickleball infrastructure across Bengaluru

While the mornings are dedicated to runners, the evenings are being transformed by the sound of soccer balls being kicked around and the rhythm of playing pickleball. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world due to the high number of players in a small area, as well as its extreme accessibility. The infrastructure of Bengaluru is struggling to keep up with the demand, resulting in more than 80 new pickleball courts opening across the city, in cities like Indiranagar and Whitefield.
The expansion of pickleball is continuing with the conversion of corporate terrace spaces and tech parks into courts. This includes hosting the World Pickleball Championships in Bengaluru, with more than 300 athletes competing at an expert level. This indicates that pickleball has transitioned from being a recreational activity to being a competitive sport. Pickleball is being widely embraced as a way for all ages, from tech professionals to retirees, to come together and enjoy a sport that has a significantly shorter learning curve compared to tennis.
Boutique Specialization and Intentionality

With the dramatic increase in participation in “high-octane” sporting events, there is also an enormous increase in the pursuit of “intelligent movement.” The boutique fitness industry (which includes Pilates and ) is growing at a compound annual rate of 7.39% per year (2023).
Bengaluru has experienced rapid growth in small studios focusing on providing fitness solutions with an emphasis on improving overall well-being (or “core intelligence”) and achieving longevity in both the manner in which one trains and the overall effects of training on one’s body versus traditional bodybuilding.
There has been an increase in consumer behaviour change as evidenced by the 66% year-over-year increase in global bookings for Pilates, reflecting a similar trend locally. This trend is also indicative of the increasing number of consumers looking to break free from the adverse effects of long periods of sedentary desk jobs through the use of low-impact, high-precision forms of exercise to maintain their mobility for the long term as opposed to being only temporary in relation to their physical appearance.
The Data-Driven Resident

The basis of this entire movement is attributed to the advancement of technology within the city and specifically among its residents. The wearable technology market has experienced a significant increase (14.6%) during the past three years, resulting in all residents utilizing data to track their fitness progress, whether it be through wearables such as smart rings that are worn on the hand, digital display boards, or any other quantifiable means of tracking their activities.
Bengaluru is Providing Evidence that by “Getting Together to Move,” a community will be in sync with each other and create a “new ecosystem“. Bengaluru is leading the way in creating a healthier and more connected community. By replacing traditional networking through sporting events with “power play” and solo activities with large group community runs, Bengaluru is creating a new communal heartbeat focused on both enhancing physical health and developing human connections.
